| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
Pictured is a hand-carved "freehand" shape briar pipe by Poul Winslow. It is one of three Winslows I own, and one of about fifty pipes in my collection. It is carved from briar, as are most smoking pipes today, which comes from the root of the heath plant, mostly grown around the Mediterranean region.
Shot in a small light tent, two lights on either side of the tent, angled downward at about 45 degrees.
S-curve added in Photoshop to increase contrast. Sharpened slightly. |

Hi Bob,
A good still life shot here.
I think the composition is okay. It doesn't really intrigue me or excite me if you know what I mean. It looks a little bit like a insurance shot. Maybe a more shallow dof or different point of view would do he trick.
The use of the light tent proves it's value for diffusing the light but also for the nice long highlight along the mouth piece. Only way to get that, as far as I know, is to have a big light source. That's pretty much what the light tent is. A light source that surrounds the object.
I like your choice of background. The texture of the fabric is great together with the texture of the pipe.
I think it's a little bit over exposed or maybe it's the PP work that, to me, make the colours look a little pale.
I did a workshop. I hope you like it.
Cheers,
Jens
