[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I've thoroughly enjoyed Perryhooter's (Robert's) maritime photos over the last several months, and was finally in a position to post one of my own. My wife and I spent a long weekend in Savannah, Georgia, and I shot this mostly empty container ship just underway (at least it appeared empty from my vantage point) along the Savannah River that separates Georgia from South Carolina. The large building in the background is the Westin Hotel on Hutchinson Island. I thought about cloning it out of the photo, but wanted this to be a true representation of what I saw from the bank of the river. The ship is the "Star Davanger" from Singapore and is heading downriver toward the Atlantic Ocean, 17 miles away. Not sure what the mast in the bow is for - maybe Robert can help me out on that.
More Savannah pictures to come.

Nice shot! I work in Savannah so I'm very familiar with the exact spot you took that photo. Between the Tugboat place and the Marriott right? I have a photo on TL that I took from the exact spot! :)

Hello Robert
Another Dutch friend here
(friend of John Tulip)
Great shot ! And the other Robert will open this with a big smile on his face
Bye
Rob

At first it looks as if the hotel is part of the boat. Nice clear photo. I like the clouds. Interesting shapes.

Hello Robert !

Well , what a nice surprise and honor ! It is already late , but I will write a last critique before going to bed, and join Martine who is waiting patiently ....

Robert I have recognized immediately the place , as I have already visited Savannah in the past.
I had business relationships in Savannah for many years. Just a few blocks away for this spot, Colonial Marine Industries have their main office. They operate a few ships. One of them served Savannah and Trois-Rivieres from 1989 until 2004. The MV Eagle sailed between these two ports bringing China in bulk for our paper mills up in Canada. Note China clay is used in the paper industry to make the glossy finish in books and magazine papers.

This ship is operated by Star Shipping . The ship is working on a regular line from Rotterdam to Savannah, Mobile , San Francisco.

The look of your image is really strange with the Westin Hotel stowed on deck ! The illusion is perfect as the hotel is tilted to the same angle as the trim of the ship . Really impressive.

These D Class ships are equipped with deck cranes specially designed with gantry cranes able to handle containers , specialized spreaders to lift paper rolls ,
unitized woodpulp and even grabs for bulk cargoes sometimes.
click here for an example of stowage.

About the bow. Like the good old days , this observation point, I believe is for a look out in case of a full deck load of containers. Visibility is reduced from the bridge. In case of fog or restricted visibility, a man can be nested there. It is also quite possible, bridge controls are also installed there, so they can steer from there to.

Unfortunately, I could not find a proof of this theory yet.

Robert , if you pass by Colonial Marine Industries Inc. located 26 East Bryan Street, please stop and say Hello to Dennis Voxnaes, Manager Chartering Dept and his team on my hehalf !

Of course they do not know me as Perryhooter but by my real name !
I got to go now. It is already 00:42 !

Tomorrow I am heading North to attend on a german ship for the next three days in Port Saguenay .

Thank you again , and I am looking forward to see more ships.... on your pages.
Good night !

Robert
