Blue Norther, filly of the great Northern Dancer, nearing the wire at the finish of the Kentucky Oaks, a race for fillies the Friday before the Kentucky Derby. Legendary Jockey, Bill Shoemaker, rode the filly to victory. Blue Norther's sire, three-year-old Northern Dancer, won the Kentucky Derby the very next day. What a great combination for two days of thoroughbred racing at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. And what an honor it was for me to capture this historic event.

Camera: Nikon F2. Film: Kodak Tri-X, 400 ASA. Lens, 110mm Nikkor. Panned with action of the horse. 125/second, f/5.6.

You took this in 1964?? Dude, I'm getting old but I wasn't even born then :-)

Another piece of history here, and fascinating to see - the equipment and the result you got. Over 50 years on and with all the advances in technology I wonder how many treklensers would be able to produce a shot like this. Damned few, would be my guess - and I include myself in the majority of us who couldn't do this.

Great example of panning, the composition is great with the number just in the frame and while I might prefer a touch more space ahead of the horse, the image feels well balanced with some nice lines through the shot - the crop, the riders back, the horse's head for example. Really a delightful posting, I enjoy this a lot.

Great action shot - a moment beautifully and dramatically captured. Such a great sense of the movement and focus of the jockey - I second everything Richard said about the calibre of this shot!

Very nice action shot Joe. I like the photo exposing the full body of the rider forward. So, it looks like an action shot doesn't need to be 1000/second.

Hi Mr. Joe,
I agree totally with what the other members said, here!
This is a fantastic archived photo!
The panning reveals an excellent focus on the jockey and the B&W, all the range of gray tones between black and white. We can tell about this photo, that you made honor at the silver film photography.
Really a great action photo! Bravo! Annie
