[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is a Carpenter bee they are large, hairy bees distributed worldwide. They can be important pollinators, especially of open-faced flowers. These bees don't live in a "hive" such as honey bees do. They do, however, tend to accumulate in certain areas. They are known to attack any unpainted or unfinished wooden items or dead tree limbs or trunks.

Most of the congregating bees you see in the early spring will be males bees. They hang around, waiting for the females, and just like all males they are very territorial, and will confront you whenever you enter their territory. Male bees are incapable of stinging, and are only checking you out. While the females do have a stinger, they are very docile and are not known to sting people, even when disturbed. If you stand still for a minute or two they will forget you are there and leave you alone - unless, of course, you happen to be a female carpenter bee.

You can completely ignore the ones that "buzz" you, they're the males. The females are much too busy getting their galleries ready to deposit their eggs to bother with you. Females will work all summer, you just won't notice them. The woodpeckers will, however.

Ah, another great macro and of the the north end of a south going carpenter bee! This is beautifully detailed with even the pollen grains on the bee's legs visible. A nice color accent is supplied by the lantana blossoms.

I have some of these living in a wooden table on my balcony, sawdust shows up on the floor. I suppose I should kill them, but I don't have the heart to...

Nice informative note is the icing on the cake.
Best regards,
Lois

Fran,
Great macro of a bee. I take a lot of these shots and I'm waiting for the flower season at our local nature center. This shot got me kind of excited thinking about it. The colors here are great and the shallow DOF is pleasant. Great notes....Nice work Fran,
Scott
