Chevrolet (Shev-ro-LAY), or Chevy for short was co-founded by Louis Chevrolet and William C. Durant. Louis Chevrolet was a racecar driver, born on December 25, 1878, in La Chaux de Fonds, Switzerland. William Durant, founder of General Motors, had been forced out of GM in 1910 and wanted to use Louis Chevrolet's designs to rebuild his own reputation as a force in the automobile industry. On November 3, 1911, Chevrolet entered the automobile market to compete with the Ford Model T. A year later, the "Classic Six" was introduced. The Classic Six was a 5-passenger touring sedan equipped with a 299 in3 (4.9 L), 6-cylinder engine capable of taking the car to a top speed of 65 miles per hour (104 km/h.)

In 1916, Chevrolet was profitable enough to allow Durant to buy a majority of shares in GM. After the deal was complete in 1917, Durant was president of General Motors, and Chevrolet was merged into GM, becoming a separate division. Famous Chevy models include the large and luxurious Impala (1958) and the innovative air cooled rear-engined Corvair (1960 - 1969.) Chevrolet had a great influence on the American automobile market during the 1950s and 1960s. In 1963, one out of every ten cars sold in the United States was a Chevrolet.

Tidbits of Chevy history…1
Chevrolet first used its "bowtie" logo in 1913.

The legendary small-block Chevy V8 introduced. This innovative engine will become one of the most famous Chevy engines ever. With versions rated from 162 brake horsepower (bhp) to 180 with the optional 4-barrel, dual-exhaust "power-pack." The '55 models break new styling ground, set new sales records, and change the look of the American automobile.

First bucket seats in industry offered in Corvettes.

Bel Air Nomad station wagon introduced. This vehicle helps fuel American's fascination with "getting away from it all." In the cities the growing popularity of station wagons was a definite factor in the vacation-by-car boom.

In the workshop is the full auto!

Thanks for stopping by,
Fran

I have seen a few of these cars out here too - and they are so unusual they are always noticed! Quite ugly I think, but not by so most men!! Good shot of the old thing, Fran, (the car I mean, not you!). TFS
Janice

Hi Fran,

Excellent POV showing the detail that some classic cars were renowned for. Top notes to accompany. Not many of this make down here in Tasmania, but plenty back West, TFS,
David

Hello Fran,

I thank his affection and his present,
I am very happy with him, a beautiful car
they are wonderful, and you turned still
here. The details are surprising.
I adored the composition. Beautiful work!
Thank you very much, I adored to know a little more
on all this that you wrote.
Congratulations Fran and thank you.

Hello Fran!

Great note. Great composition. The grainy look makes your photo older than it is actually. By the way did you see this one ? a Chevy 57 posted by TonyF recently.... Small world indeeed!

Cheers!
Robert

HUmm...You are briging nice souvenirs with this one Fran. This was a very popular model. Nice POV.

Well done!

Réal

i luv that car ,even if green aint my favorite color...,great crop on the chrome and good shot angle
Phil

Fran,
This is a very good blast from the past!
I am too young to remember these when they were new but I sure have seen a lot of them at car shows. I like the POV you have presented here. Even though the 57' was a more popular year, the 56' was the prototype for it, so it was very important. Good notes, well done.
Scott

No doubt about it... A retro photo is here! I like that! A good little detail but workfull for imagination! This time of heavy car is finish. Let live the plastic and fiberglass :)
