[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is my first lightning shot. I know it's not the greatest shot in the world especially with the power lines in the foreground. I'm not good at cloning, but I am going to work on it. I cropped it down a little. If you have any suggestions on how to take better lightning shots, let me know.

For someone(read me :) ) who has tried and failed at every attempt, this is definitely a fairly decent one. One thing is you probably need a whole lot of patience. I dont think the power lines are that bad in the foreground. Its actually interesting that they are almost parallel till a certain point.
As for making this a better picture you should try cloning and maybe even a better crop.

Keep at it.

That's a good image, the fact that the lightning follow the same direction as the power line is great a symbol! I would just work on the levels trying to make it more visibel it's a bit dark. But surely an interesting image!

Excellent photo, Derrick! I'm envious! I like your composition just fine the way you've presented it; I don't think the power lines detract from the image. According to the National Geographic Photography Field Guide, the best way to accomplish lightning photography is to set the aperture at f/5.6 for a low ASA, and f/8 or f/11 for faster speeds, like ASA 200. Focus on infinity in the direction of the lightning, and set the shutter speed to B (bulb), keeping the shutter open for several flashes. If there is a lot of ambient light in the sky, you might need to limit the exposure to 5-20 seconds, which sounds about right especially with digital, to keep the amount of noise down. Your mileage may vary here, of course, and I've never tried lightning photography, so I can't verify the above, but at least it might give you some guidelines. In any case, well done!

Hi Derrick

It's very unusual to see sheet lightning, on a horizontal plane like this. (Most shots on TL & TE, are vertical bolts.) Well managed time exposure, with good color & sharpness. Excellent work!

Hi Derrick,
Must be a great experience to capture this.
The power lines are the peoples way to transport electricity; so the combination of these two is rather evident; you could have mentioned it ac/dc.
Nice to experiment with these things,
Have a good time Derrick,

Huub

HELLO DERRICK!
I always find lightning shots very impressive and amazing. I must confess I'm really afraid of them so I never Found the courage to take a shot of it! I'm Glad that you did :) The composition is trully original! I've never seen a picture before where the lightning is falling from left to right and not horizontal! It really seems to cut of the tree!
Congratulations.
Luci

PS: Have you got ant tipps for me how I can capture the lightning? Please tell me it's not dangerous :)

Hi Derrick,

I know it is very difficult to take lightning shots. This is a very nice one. Very different also. I have never seen a lightning coming horizontally. You made it. Nicely done. TFS.

Kiran.
