My father and a coworker at the Farmers Grain company in my hometown. The company buys and sells soy beans, corn and wheat from local farmers. They also provide storage space for a fee. The grain is taken from the facility by truck to another company facility in Greenville, MS 30 miles west. There it is loaded onto barges, transported down the Mississippi River and shipped around the country and the world.
At the peak of harvest season, the work is hot and long. My dad works about 18 hours a day, 7 days a week for several months. On a few occasions he has worked for a straight 24 hours. Most of his work is outdoors. So this is done in the intense summer heat of the Mississippi Delta (and in the cold of winter, which Mississippi can serve up well enough) While at home this summer, I often saw him fall asleep literally with his supper in his hand. The work is physically and mentally demanding and dangerous.
I visited one day and met Jake, one of his coworkers. I think they enjoyed the visit (and the rest!) They are two of the few full-time employees at the facility. Most are seasonal. |
