these are just some old metal pieces I had around so thought they might make an interesting picture.I changed this to sepia to give it an old time kinda look since these are some old looking parts.

the pieces in the photo are at front a splitting wedge, center is an axe head, and the rear are some pieces from a railroad line.

THis was a good attempt Brian but I think the picture lacks a coherent focal point. The large out of focus tool in the foreground demands too much attention and doesn't really add much to the composition. The wood grain and iron textures are good but they need more contrast and sharpness. These sort of still life photos are difficult. None of the pieces can be seen in its entirety but it isn't strong enough to be a complete abstract.

I hope you find my comments useful. I think there is good potential here.

Welcome to TL, Brian. I partially agree with David here, the rusty tools are your subject but they're not evenly spread in the compo, so they are fighting for attention. Also, the wood is more in focus than any of the tools. There are some things you could have done to avoid that, like leaving the tools in colour and desaturating only the wood, using layers. Or you could have applied a selective blur on the wood, but IMO that would have looked artificial.
I think this would have looked better if you had moved more to the right, so the tools would have been in one plane... and in the same DoF (depth of field).

Hope this is clear enough... If not, tell me.

Thanks for sharing (TFS).

Wow Brian, a great graphic piece, this relics of a technology that are fading away rapidly. The sepia is a very good choice to accentuate the old feel. Love all the heavy, rusty lines here.
The randomness of the placement of the tools and the tight crop IMO are a vital part of this composition. You have to work a bit, taking this picture in, but considering the object and symbolism I like it a lot here.
Very good job!
