[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I shot this one in 2003 using a Nikon E880.
---------------------------------------------
The Angel Oak is a live oak tree (Quercus virginiana) - native tree species found throughout the Lowcountry, but especially on the sea islands.

Live oaks are not particularly tall trees, but have wide spreading canopies. Only in the very old specimens do you find massive limbs resting on the ground, as do the limbs of the Angel Oak.

This magnificent live oak is believed to be more than 1,400 years old. Its massive branches slope gently, reaching arm-like to the ground, and create 17,000 square feet of shade. Angel Oak, named for the plantation that was here, was once a gathering point for area slaves.

The age of the oak has never been substantiated scientifically and determining the exact age will be extremely difficult, if not impossible, because the tendency of live oaks toward heart rot makes core samples unusable.

If you wish to see it here's where you can find it:
3688 Angel Oak Rd., off Rte. 700, Johns Island, SC, USA.
Cost: Free

PS. Next, I'll post the whole tree (Or at least as much as I could get through the lens :)... I wish I had a wide angle lens at that time)

Hi Dan, looks like your looking down at the subject from above, as romior said, its a very artistical perspective. :)

A beautiful shot, well composed and good treatment.
In England we have Sherwood Forest where you will find the Major Oak.This tree is so big that it now needs props to help the branches to stay upright. As you say in your note it is difficult to put an age to these trees.
TFS, regards Jean

Very good from all points of view; geometry, lighting, sharpness and contrast… I would let it without frame or only one color one.
