I'm back for another 3 days in Memphis this week, enjoying more ribs and Southern hospitality!

As an architecture and urbanism enthusiast, I have been fascinated by the downtown area, or what's left of it. Downtown Memphis is a textbook example of the negative impact of suburban development on a city core. Many beautiful early 20th century buildings have been abandonned and are now empty shells. There is a an eerie feeling that nobody comes to work here anymore, and at 8AM or 5PM, streets and sidewalks are virtually deserted. I have walked a kilometer this morning to get from my hotel to the office, and the only people I met were the homeless.

On the other hand, there is an effort made to bring back life to the city, and I have seen several buildings being renovated or transformed in lofts or condos. And BTW, the restaurants are awesome!

This particular shot is of a building I had spotted last week. Yesterday morning, I took the time to immortalize it. As I was taking a few pictures, a man greeted me and commented that the building was now in much better shape. I agreed with him and added that it looked beautiful in the morning sunshine. Then he told me that he was the one who painted it recently and fixed the roof!

Courage Memphis! One day your city will return to its glory!

Enjoy!

Hello Pierre,
this almost looks like a b/w. The tones go very well with the clean symmetrical composition. Great sharp details and wonderful POV.

Salut Pierre,
L'éclairage est superbe sur cette facade avec la chaleur du soleil. Les contrastes entre ce beige et le noir et surtout cette ombre du lampadaire.
Superbe.
Luc

Hi, Pierre! Can you see me waving from 2 hours away? :D

This does have that early morning sunlight feeling - very nice "catch." Yes, Memphis has made huge changes in the past few years, and the downtown area is really coming back to life! Little Rock's downtown area is in the same fix, on a smaller scale, but it's following the same path.

Have you gone to the Rendezvous? Seen the ducks in the lobby of the Peabody? There's currently an exhibit of Annie Leibovitz at the Brooks Museum, I believe, if you like her work. I've been wanting to get over there to visit that one...

Oh, yeah, you're working...enjoy on the off hours!
Gayle :)

beautiful tones and lighting. nice compositions. great architectural shot. tfs

Great Shot. The colour and Shadows give it life. I think its the same all over the world, its the same in Copenhagen, a few old buildings in the harbour area are preserved and converted, other wise they are building "luxury" apartments that will be slums in 10 years.
Regards.

J'aime simplement, j'aime le ton, j'aime cet ombrage, j'aime cette architecture, oui j'aime bien ton choix.

Nice composition as well as ton to this shot. I like it. PS Someone needs to tell the painter not to paint over all of the windows... TFS

une belle façade éclairée merveilleusement. J'aime beaucoup l'ombe du lampadaire

This is a very nice photograph, or should I say a nice architectural photograph of an old building. The high contrast you did here is like an architectural presentation drawing. The contrast and the highlights delineated the architectural elements of the building. The shadows and the highlights are the lines itself, of course with very few exceptions. It will be more emphasized if you turn this to black and white.

Ah......my home city! Nicely seen and captured. I love to shoot dowtown! B

The clarity and quality of light are what strike me first in this one Pierre. Your note certainly enhances the mood of the shot. Nice work.

Joe

Tu as su profiter d'un bel éclairage Pierre. Les couleurs sont magnifiques. C'est quasiment un duotone. Excellente présentation de cette architecture.
Bien fait!
Réal

Lovely pattern, colors and well balanced lighting. A simple but effective visually shot!

I have a confession to make! Forgive me Pierre for I have sinned!

My last post is actually inspired by this shot. I kept it in my folder, not much satisfied by it, yet not sure whether to delete it. Once I saw this one I decided to give it a try.

I like two moments on this one. Your decision to brake the repeating patterns by including the plain block on the right. The second is the shadow, which adds adition spin. Excellent work.

A.

WOW Pierre! The shadows and shape playing together in the morning light are fantastic! Love the composition and the pole works in the frame well. Love your notes!!! The blacks and tans are beautiful together... the contrast is perfect. Very well seen and executed Pierre!

Love and Peace always

"he told me that he was the one who painted it" and you immortalize it with a click! Great jobs you 2 have.

Very attractive front Pierre; only one little complaint:
On the left some skew could help to set the lines straight along the frame. But you will loose some important parts of the stones perhaps; a smaller crop is not possible because of the big S. Well, difficult enough.
Was nice to study this Pierre.
Thanks
Huub
