This is the official beginning of my Memphis in May series which I will be running both here on TL and also on TE, concurrently, as I have too much material to stretch it out on one site. Also, some of the shots I will be posting will probably be a better fit for one site or the other.
Anyway, this was shot last Thursday at a place called King's Palace Cafe, the band is known as "The Soul Outsiders" and they were excellent. It was raining off and on, they kept everyone dancing through the whole evening. They were incredible in that they were playing in the late afternoon when we first got there, and they were still playing late in the evening when we left Beale Street. There were several band members - they seemed to come and go - there were two male singers, one female singer, three guitarists, a bass player, a keyboard player came later and several apparent guest singers that appeared from time to time. It was a great show, this band has a seemingly endless repertoire of blues, soul and funk to draw from.
Of course, every three songs or so, one of the band members would walk around with that big, optimistic white bucket for tips - they said that was the only way they get paid - so since I was stealing parts of their souls I chipped in plenty. Memphis operates very well on tips, apparently. I learned to keep several one dollar bills in my pockets real quick...
What was really pleasant about Memphis was that southern hospitality. You hear about it, but you really don't know what it's like until you experience it. Everyone was so incredibly nice there! Even the bums were polite and actually tried to do something nice for you before they hit you up for money. Show you how to get to your hotel? Need an umbrella over that camera while you shoot?
If you have an opportunity to go to Memphis, I highly recommend that you spend at least three days there. We have to go back because we didn't see everything we wanted to... Missed the Stax Museum and other sites. Plus it was so rainy the whole time there were lots of things I would have liked to photograph, but could not. However, that gave me a good excuse to party way into the night and not have to get up before dawn to catch the light somewhere. Sort of forced me to shoot people, too, which I really need practice at.
So, here's The Soul Outsiders, singing "Knock On Wood" - that ol' Sam & Dave chestnut.
Shot with my 18-200mm VR in the near darkness of an outdoor patio at the King's Palace. |
