I'll call this one "Blues in the Night", the evening is just ramping up, there are bands playing everywhere - on the street, in the park, in the bars, every step you take on Beale Street you hear live music, sometimes assaulting you, sometimes luring you, and at other times, making you dance. There were people dancing in the street, dancing in the park, and dancing in the bars. There is the ubiquitous tip bucket next to all the bands, maybe the band members are walking it around, or maybe they expect you to find it. It's not like you're gonna miss it, it's big and white and used to have, uh, pickles in it. Give 'em a couple bucks and shake yer money maker, or walk on and get out of the way - someone might want to dance on your space.
This was shot at Handy Park (Yeah, that Handy - W.C. Handy) on Beale Street in Memphis, Tennessee, just at the end of dusk on Thursday night. Around practically every turn in Memphis there is a musical reference, or music, or both. There is Rufus Thomas Blvd., Elvis Presley Blvd., statues of blues, soul, gospel and rock 'n' roll singers and musicians. There are brass musical notes in the sidewalks over musicians and singers names. It is the biggest part of Memphis, the part that Memphis flaunts and uses to pull you into town. Nowhere is the music more fun or more decadent than Beale. See the workshop for a complementary image, too! |
