Memphis has some great public transportation - I loved these old street cars, all adorned with polished wood, noisily ambling down the center of many of the streets. There's no air conditioning on these things, so the windows have to be open in the late spring and summer - not only can you hear all the traffic sounds around you, you can hear the creaks, groans, rattles and thunks of the parts of the street car as it does it's work. It barely moves faster than you can walk - I was using a 1/25 shutter speed to see if I could capture some movement out the windows, but we never got moving fast enough, I guess. The street cars also have a bell that rings incessantly, I suppose they need to cover the entire range of sound the human ear can detect so folks don't stand in the way and delay the trolleys from their appointed rounds.

This was captured on Friday, we were surprised at the few people that were utilizing the street cars this day. I suppose many were getting ready for the Beale St. Music Festival, the first day starts in a few hours. Who knows. This one interesting man did embark at one point (we rode the street car around in circles a couple times), he only stayed on for a couple stops. He looked like he was on a safari! Very clean and pressed, his sash and patch on his shoulder said "Blue Suede Brigade."

Thank God for the Internet, because now that I zoomed in on the original and found out what it said, I was able to Google it to come up with the link above. Here's what these guys do:

"Clad in recognizable white pith helmets and blue suede sashes, the Blue Suede Brigade is the hospitality and safety arm of the Center City Commission. These ambassadors help create a friendly, helpful, and safe Downtown environment.

Brigadiers are trained to provide assistance and information to visitors, workers, residents, and businesses throughout Downtown and the Medical District. In addition, Brigadiers are the supplemental eyes and ears of the business community and our law enforcement agencies."

So, they are the Guardian Angels of Memphis, of a sort.

I know I didn't want to mess with Charles (his nametag says that) here. He was way bigger than me, and he looked like he meant business. I was hoping he didn't take offense to me including him in my shot of the Memphis Street Car. I was there first, anyway...

I did very little to this image, shot it RAW and adjusted for daylight white balance, the Nikon picked something a little more incandescent, adjusted levels, brightness and contrast, created a frame, resized for TL, unsharp mask and that was it. I put a similar shot on TE a while back, but didn't include any people. This was my favorite of several I took on the street car, so I thought I'd post it here. Hope you all enjoy it!

Have a great Tuesday!

Wow - I'd forgotten about these things...

Great POV, nice wide shot, good and sharp.. I remember the steamy heat of western TN in the summer. "Oh my, for a glass of mommas' homemade lemonade" - or alternatively a nice cold Bud!!!

Another really cool shot Reed! I like this! The perspective is really nice. Good exposure for shade and the outside is not even OE! Good job man!
B-)

Good one Reed. Nice light and warm colors. Must have been a pretty smooth ride too .. no motion blur outside, but none inside either. Interesting old streetcar!
Great job.

Hi Reed

Nice shot of this street car.
Like the tones and colours of the wood, you have captured the details well.

Nice shot Reed. You could have used an even wider lens I think but good details and colour and pov.
Warm regards
David
