Tony.

I think you almost nailed it. My eye keeps jumping deep into the photo to the white highlights and it misses the character in the wood. It's a tricky exposure because if you go any more open or slow the shutter down, the highlights get away from you...

Maybe the thing to do is add a little fill flash or maybe better find the angle that gives your subject a bit more light and the background a bit less.

Just a thought.
