Too much of a good thing -"Trees"

| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
I know I missed it on Friday, but I'm on day 12 of my work week, so please cut me a little slack.
A lot of back story here.
If you've ever been to Waco, you know about the water. When the Army Corps of Engineers dammed up the Bosque River to create Lake Waco, they flooded a whole lot of space. The Bosque's flood plain was wide and shallow, making the resulting lake wide and shallow. A wide and shallow lake allows quite a bit of sunlight to penetrate a large percentage of the water content. A lot of sunlight encourages algal growth. Being in Texas, the water temperature is rather warm, also encouraging algal growth. We have dairies upstream from us that raise cattle. They poop and inject nutrients into the water. Algae bloom in the spring and then begin to die off when they overpopulate. When the die, they release a chemical called geosmin. Geosmin smells terrible.
The good news: geosmin is not harmful at all. The bad news: it's expensive to remove.
Result: Waco water tastes bad ... really bad.
A couple years ago, the city decided to create an artificial wetland to help with organic pollutants coming from upstream. This has had mixed success, but has given us a wonderful location for photography.
In the creation of this wetland, historically dry land was flooded. This tree must have thrived before we took away its environment. With the coming of the water, this tree was unable to cope and drowned. It did leave behind a great, graphic image, though.
Post-processing:
* boosted contrast
* converted to grayscale
* bumped exposure
* + red, - green, - purple, - blue
* burned in water
* dodged tree
* sharpened, resized, and converted to jpg
This is my second attempt at processing this photo. The first is in the workshop. |

Bonjour Scott,
Nice contribution to the Friday theme. Original image, excellent idea to treat this image as a B&W, it give it more drama. Composition is interesting though the horizon could be leveled. The PP you did is a very good improvment compare to your original. It correct the underexposure you got because of a bright sky (yes dull sky are very bright in this kind of sceen). I tried a WS, not meaning it's better than yours. Great work and keep participating to the Friday themes.
