[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
It was a great pleasure and honor to photograph one of my former professors from ASU. As the artistic director and founding member of a new Arizona theatre company, Professor Vining wanted a dramatic image for placement in corporate annuals and theatre programs. We made the shot on location in the outer corridor of the Paul V. Galvin Playhouse at ASU. For the main light I used a 600 watt strobe in a medium chimera soft-box place about 12 feet from the subject. I clipped a 20 inch silver disc reflector to a light stand and placed it below the subject’s face to add fill lighting under his brow. Daylight was coming through all of the small plaster window openings, and I adjusted my shutter speed to expose for the natural light while letting the hallway walls go dark. Because we wanted to create a more dramatic, “professorial” mood, I did not add accent, background or hair lighting to noticeably separate the shadow areas of his head and body from the background wall. PP included minimal cropping, sizing and level adjustments as well as dust spot removal.

Great portrait, the subject's character and soul is almost visible

Great composition in this portrait, Jim! The way he leans to our left and the windows in the back are going in an upwards fashion creates a nice effect, one of controlled unbalance. Very nice light too. Well done!

Wonderful dignity portrayed here, with a nice sparkle in the professor's expression. I like your treatment of the background and shadows, Jim.

Gayle :)

Hello Jim, I've seen your latest post but technically I was taken by this pic of yours! Perfect set of lightnings really gives the "professorial" mood! :) Nice portrait, and a good choice of B&W! Thank you for sharing...
cheers

an interesting portrait, love the dof, the expression and the tones, thanx, M, (*_*)

Hi Jim,

I'm a great fan of film especially black and white images. I love the square look of 6x6 medium format cameras as well. This image is superb. Excellent exposure, excellent lighting. You obviously have great mastery of lighting which I'm still in the process of learning. Your note is a great learning tool. Thanks for this inspiring portrait.

Anton
