[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The movement of the horses and jockeys when they race is fantastic for photography. At 1/200 sec you can pan and catch some motion and some sharpness to illustrated the feeling of action and movement.

By duplicating the background layer and creating layer 1, you can then sharpen the background layer and go back to layer one, make a layer mask (third icon to the left on the layer palatte) and paint over just he areas you want to sharpen...like the clothes on the jockeys. This leaves the rest of the photo natural and makes the jockeys pop from the page. It also avoids the halos from sharpening the entire photo.

If you know that you are using 1/200 sec and it is sunny outside, you can use a polarizing filter to reduce some of the light so that the depth of field is reduced...in this case to F4 which is the smallest aperture of this lens.

Hi Roger,
This is great, really portrays the explosive action of a horse race.
The discussion of the technique is something I'll have to try out, thanks for that.
The photo itself is well lit, with strong vivid colors and, as you say, becomes almost 3D in effect.
Very nice,
TFS, and the education,
Wilt
