[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
It wouldn’t be right to post pictures from the races without showing some actual horse racing. This shot was taken at 1/160 sec and was a difficult panning challenge. If the object moving at around 35mph was a car, and the lens was relatively long at 135mm it would possible to shoot the picture at a shutter speed of about 1/80 second (assuming it is stabilized). Because of the different planes of motion with different parts of the horses and jockeys moving separately, it was necessary to use a faster shutter to get some areas in focus and some blurred to show motion.

The other problem was to shoot the picture with space in front of the horse to give room for the subjects to move within. The best way I have found to do this using the burst mode is to set the focus point on the left side of the frame. By panning with the focus point on the left, there is room on the right side of the picture. The same result could be accomplished by using a center focus point and cropping the shot.

For me what attracts me is balance and light. In this case I like the angle of the rear rider’s arm extending into the frame from the left. The arm angle is almost parallel to the horse’s front leg so my eye is drawn to it. The front rider in green is sharp so the eye is dawn to him and the head of the lead horse attracts the viewer because of the sharpness of the facial features. The blurred legs are effective and not easy to get at the races. Usually the guard rail is too high to see around. At this particular track while walking around there were low spots to the guard rail.
