[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
While on vacation recently, a friend and I traveled the Big Sur coast of California for two days (not long enough!), enjoying the scenic drive and discovering coastal access points we had not known about before. This shot was taken south of Point Lobos at a roadside pullout where there are paths out to the edges of the cliffs, apparently worn by crazy people who have no fear of falling off the edges:)

Unfortunately, the sun was in front of me here, bleaching out the sky of course, and giving me exposure challenges to struggle with. I ended up trying an HDR for the first time (or perhaps a "faux" HDR, since I started with only one image). It helped the sky a bit and gave me a better overall result. Still not what I saw in my mind's eye, but I like the rugged shoreline and afternoon light on the craggy rocks.

PP: created four separate images with different exposure values in Camera Raw, used CS3's HDR function to combine the exposures for better sky and color depth, added border, resized, sharpened, jpegged.

What a great warm quality to the rocks on the right Karen.
I think the HDR technique helped bring out some really interesting textures.
Excellent "thirds" composition approach. I know this area well.
Hoping to get back there in the Spring.
Well done.

Hi Karen great details and colors, reallyabeautifullandscape

Hi Karen

Lovely view. Try using GND filters to balance the sky and foreground exposures. That way you won't need to do HDR processing.

Allan

Hi Karen
The light colored strata of rock just above the water line does a nice job of carrying the eye through the image. Nice texture on the FG rock.
Now that you have done an HDR (sort of) try mulitple Raw images on any high contrast exposure with CS3. You can also down loud a trial copy of Photomatrix Pro 3 to step up your HDR ability.

I tried to rescue your sky with Nikon's Capture NX. The WS fix bled into your frame which I didn't correct.

Hi Karen,
Wonderful POV of the Californian shores, awsome landscape. The enlightment is a bit dark, but this doesn't destroy the composition at all. Fine formations, calm and peaceful mood. Good job, TFS!
Greetings,
Kristof

Beautiful warm colours - the eye is drawn to the colours and details on the rocks to the left, so the washed out sky is no longer an issue. PP work has obviously brought out the best in this shot.
Thanks for sharing
Mark

Hello Karen, thanks for sharing the 'Big Sur' with us; it is one drive that I would really like to take one time.
The sunlight on the rocks has brought out the lovely warm colours.
The bleached sky is always a problem, but it doesn't detract from this shot.
Tfs, regards Jean.
