[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Yesterday I was walking around San Rafael California stopping people on the street and asking if I could photograph them. Everyone said yes and some of the shots were pretty interesting. This man had a particularly interesting face. I could imagine him as an artist in Paris or a scientist in Berlin. I liked his intensity.

Technically I am still getting used to the 1.2 lens, trying to balance the depth of field, shutter speed and background blur. Things are improving but it is taking quite a bit of practice to get it right.

Holy crap, Rog,
what a shot! Fabulous lighting, mad good detail and I love his expression. The B&W is perfect, great tones and he reminds me of Peter O'Toole in "Unforgiven". Man, nice shot! Many thanks and all the best for a great New Year,
Shelly

Well done with the lighting too.

Very nice close up portrait here Roger. I like the tight crop and the lighting brings out the detail in a nice way. Nice focus on the eyes as well. Overall very nice work.

Kevin

Seems to me you have mastered the lens already Roger.
Amazing tones, clarity, focus and light.
I think ShellyOB has it explained perfectly, just like your shot has been captured perfectly.

Excellent work.

great lesson of portrait, Roger
congratulations because you've been able to show perfect way in the intensity and the lived in this face
congratulations sERGIO

hi Roger,
what an interesting face - he reminds me of Richard Harris in his late days, I don't know - the expression, the hair, the wrinkles on his face... a face that tells a lifetime of stories.
beautiful light by the way - I like the way it fills the image but it doesn't disturb.
I don't know if you cropped the image and if you did, how much - but the background blur feels just right to me.
thanks for your notes - I find them always useful.

Vey nice portrait !

I was reading on an old photo book from the 50's that 85 mm lenses were regarded as the ideal focal length for portraits, and also think the 1.2 may be hard to focus, but get the exact detachment from background

Hi Roger!

Very good portrait! There is strong expression here and beautiful quality of the image!

Regards from Netherlands,
Edward

Good sharp crisp detail, nice b&w gradients and great eye contact from your subject.

Because his furthest eye is in shadow, it's not so crucial that it's not as crisply in focus, but with a shutter of 1/1600s you did have the luxury to play with a wider aperture, and with that lens you would still get the beautiful, soft background bokeh you seek with an aperture of f/8.0 or smaller.

Ciao Roger

Beautiful portrait
The expression of your face is fantastic,
traces the lines in your face.
good detail and I love his expression.
He reminds me of Darwin.
Well done with the lighting too.

Hi Roger,

congrats & TFS,

Armel.

Wow, great one, Roger. This man's craggy face and wild white hair and beard are caught with the sun at a perfect angle. Excellent sharpness shows every line and wrinkle of his intriguing face. Great expression on his face, too. Well done!
