This man was incredible looking….great features and character. I asked his permission to photograph him but he didn’t speak English. He referred me to his granddaughter who translated. He was happy to have his picture taken. I emailed it to the family.

In this situation it worked best to look for the elders in the event and ask permission to take their pictures. Once that was done and the families could see the images, everyone was very cordial.

Conversion was done in the Channel Mixer…with his skin coloring the Green and Blue channels were increased and the Red channel decreased.

I learned something last week while reading Scott Kelby’s book on Photoshop CS4….when you open the photograph in Raw or in Camera Raw there is an Adjustment Brush in the upper palate. When you click on this brush you can adjust any parameter you want and paint over the parts you want to adjust. In this case the eyes were a bit dark so I painted over them and adjusted the exposure setting much easier then I could have using adjustment layers and masks

ciao Roger..
thanks for the interesting note also about CS4..
sight is often more expressive than words.. you seem have taken the deeply soul of this old man..
with eyes that look veiled by time.. there is a lot of sensations looking to this portrait.. sufferences, joy.. sadness and happiness of an entire life.. seem to be in every detail of his face..
excellent and impressive capture, really effective!
many thanks
ciao Marco

WOW Roger, you aren't kidding! Incredible features and you picked them ALL up! I love the white BG! DO you know how hard this is?? In bright sunlight?? NO OE?? You did a fantastic job!

Hi Roger,
impressive BW portrait.
the details on his face are great.
lighting and contrast are very well managed.
excellent shot.

regards,
yopie

Although the eyes are the usual focal point I like the fact that the plane of focus has included the stubble on his chin, makes for a very textural image.

Good work as ever..

Cheers
David

Hello!
Wonderful portrait in b&w!
Good sharpness and nice clarity.
Greetings
Tadeusz

Very striking portrait Roger, certainly his eyes draw you in although I'm not quite sure what to read in that expression!

Very nice management of the wide aperture. The direct sun is not your usual quality of light but in the case of his eyes especially you have counteracted it well with the adjustment palette. The shadow of his nose is quite marked in my opinion, but it's not as if you carry a reflector around on these shoots ...!

Great work

Hi, Roger -
What an unforgettable face, captured with incredible sharpness detailing the "relief map" of his lined features. Despite the strong sun, this shot works well against the light background. You show great skill with Photoshop with the work you did on the eyes. Outstanding portrait.
