My friend Mario has been playing the bass professionally since he was nine years old. He is working on a solo album playing the seven string bass and needs some pictures for a CD cover…this is the first shot of a few I will post. It will be good to hear comments and might point he and to the best shot.

As with my other black and white shots, the conversion was done in the Channel Mixer using primarily the Green Channel. An Overlay Channel was added at 12% to give a bit more contrast. The shot was sharpened in the area of his eyes, glasses, jewelry as well as the metal parts of the bass.

Hi Roger

Perfect sharpness & excellent use of a shallow dof to isolate & emphasize fg detail in this superb head & shoulders b&w portrait. Marvelous lighting contrast & tonal range. Tfs!

hello Roger
i am a fan of your black and white portraits
this is again a wonderful expression you have caught here
great style and wonderful eye contact
nice conversion too
thanks for sharing

regards

Hi, Roger -
The mood of this portrait says that Mario is a serious rocker. Excellent sharp details of the jewelry and leather. I like the way the base is in the foreground but his face is the focus of the image. Not sure if I see this as a cover - I think it is a bit too busy in the background for that purpose; if you blacked out the entire background that might do it -maybe I'll try a WS - but it certainly should be included in the CD insert. Great shot

I like this a lot Roger, the face is perfection, I don't like the guitar OOF, I wonder if he could have rested it on his shoulder, if it would have been sharper. It seems to be more in the way, or too close to his face. I would have had the neck on this shoulder, with his other right hand on it and backed out just a hair and maybe gone vertical. That's just ME...doesn't mean squat! I love that channel mixer thingy! It's awesome!

Not only a good musician, but also an excellent model. I like the pose, very mysterious. A great b&w. TFS

Great shot Roger .. nice eye contact (over the glasses). Nice comp with the head of the bass beside his face. Might have been nice in focus too though, since it is the instrument in the CD.
Seven string bass - very interesting. Never heard of that before. Most bassist now play 5 strings, but I'll have to google 7 string.
Great shot.
Trudy

Brilliant portrait!!! The get-up and the props speak volumes and B&W ideal for the 'musician man' shot.. What a pose!!!

Nice work.

David

Hi Roger, I was intrigued initially because I am a would-be bass player (maybe wannabe). The face is great, perfect clarity and great expression. I agree with some of the others that it would be nice to have the bass in focus (partly because I'm trying to read what it says on it!) Nice work, Dave

Hi Roger,
I continue to be amazed by the clarity and contrast of your B&W shots. You have blown me away again with this one. I for one would not be suprised to see this on the cover of a CD. TFS

His glance makes this portrait, Roger!
Fine sharpness on his face and efficent blur on the guitar and decor. The keys (turners) on the headstock are shining like diamonds, here, I think this is a good symbol of the importance of his intrument in his life.
As usual, the B&W conversion is too much!
Bravo! Annie

Hi Roger,

Mario looks very thoughtful in your portrayal. He has a somewhat impatient look also. It's a great shot, but I would like to see other photos before I would recommend this one for a CD cover. The quality is excellent as always. TFS.

John

Very cool shot of The Artist. That eye contact is terrific and the b&w tones are beautifully delivered.

Can't fault this. Fully professional work.

Wonderful B&W portrait as usual, Roger. Amazing sharpness and light. As Rew said, "that eye contact is terrific". Congratulations and TFS!

Bruno

Hi Roger
Your portraits are very good. Looking at your page here I am very impressed with your work.
This is definitely B&W and not off-grey colours at all (like mine seem to turn out) You use the green in Chennel Mixer - I must look into that - thank you for your tips
Cheers
Janice .

Hi Roger,

This B&W portrait is excellent and should work well with the CD cover. You've captured the mood well. Very sharp with the right DOF.

Regards,
Werner

Boa noite Roger
Mario looks great here...his eyes have an interesting mood. Nice hug of the guitar by the hand.
My regards
