Hey Chuck, great idea for a shot and really good presentation of the different tonalities on black (which can be hard to present in a photo). The abstract quality and the fact that you cropped out the head (which I usually do not condone in other shots ;P hehe) really lends to the focus on the black and the shapes. Great lighting hitting from the left side to highlight certain contours on the surfer's body and sharp reflections on the black car behind. Now I know that leaving the shot in color makes the black theme more "credible" but I think this would look great in black and white because I find the reds on the surfing suit and the subtle colors reflected on the car distract from the main theme. But the horizontal cropping and the placement of the body off-center really works to make it more abstract. Great point of view from the surfer's level that emphasizes the "black on black" and good DOF. Great pose too from the surfer that shows the bends of the elbow and the knee and the side of the torso, catching light. I am going to post a workshop, hope you will like it!
