Crown of thorns starfish.

Taken at Kona (The Big Island), Hawaii using
Ikelite Underwater Housing
Ikelite Substrobe DS125

The small numbers of the crown of thorns is part of ecosystems but their population explosion is a great threat to Great Barrier Reef because they feed on living coral tissue and have few predators.

It gets its name from the dense covering of long sharp spines covering its upper surface.
