This is a Prarie Dog at the Albuquerque Zoo. Although Prarie Dogs roam free on the east mountains and along some lots on both sides of Tramway Avenue, this is the only time I've photographed the little critters. Prarie Dogs are protected by Federal Law in Albuquerque because of human encroachment on their natural habitat. There are large communities of Prarie Dogs along the Tramway Avenue and some people even put out food for them, so those Prarie Dogs are fat -- and I mean FAT! (This curious little one seem to have a natural diet and so looks just fine.)
Anyway, Prarie Dogs are not all that good, because when they are displaced or transplanted they wreck havoc on the new territory. For instance, transplanted Prarie Dogs in the Pecos dig hole in the ground on which deer and elk step into and break their legs and ultimately die. So in those parts people kill Prarie Dogs as pests.
Kind of like the carp, but that's a different story... |
