This is a reposting - original posted back in 2007. reworked the original - I think this is a vast improvement. Our skill and software improves over time I guess. Posted the origianl as a WS.

This old snag stands on the lip of a cinder cone created by volcanic action many thousands of years ago. This lava butte in part of the National Park system and is location is just south of Bend, Oregon.

Wikipedia:
Lava Butte is a cinder cone located in central Oregon, USA, just west of US Highway 97 between the towns of Bend, Oregon, and Sunriver, Oregon. About 500 ft (150 m) tall, it is part of a system of small cinder cones on the northwest flank of Newberry Volcano, a massive shield volcano which rises to the southeast. The cinder cone is capped by a crater which extends about 60 ft (20 m) deep beneath its south rim, and 160 ft (50 m) deep from the 5,016 ft (1,529 m) summit on its north side. Lava Butte is part of the Newberry National Volcanic Monument.

PP: This RAW image was exposed vor the the sky but with Nikon Capure NX I was able to bring up the foreground.

Thanks to those who are just looking and a special thanks to those who choose to critique this image.

Hi Daniel:

Very nice pp work. This is a wonderful shot. Beautiful colors and nice composition. Beautiful blue sky with amazing cloud formation. TFS.
Regards,
Jafar

I always like shots of old bare trees, and you have featured this one nicely in the POV/composition. The pp work gives the image a CGI look that reminds me a little of a Shrek movie:) There is a special light quality/mood that calls attention to all the visual details there are to enjoy. Good shot!

Salam Daniel

What a nice composition you've reached on this shot.
Great sky, greatland. excellent details and colors. TFS

Mighty well done Dan. It 's a different shot in all aspects , the green is more vivid , pronounced and talk about the upper third , yes the sky ,,, your washed-out sky has become so much more intense , bluer of course it shows ....obviously and gained much more details ,frankly like a million more than there were initially ....hum .. Geeeee, this is pure magic , the way i see it now , i am blown away by this new sky Dan ! How did you do that ? Not on a single click and Bingo here it is! A bit more complicated , no ? Anyway amazing stuff , absolutely enjoy the changes it has brought to your original posting .I am going to check out this TA right away , need to read about it !
TFS, a vast improvement indeed ,
Carol

I certainly see an improvement here Dan, very effective lightening of the foreground without any loss of saturation. That red volcanic rock is certainly eyecatching, and that forest stretching as far as the eye can see makes a stunning vista.
Nice PP work on this one!

Dan,
Did you use Topaz Adjust with the new version?
I really like the pop of the new image - has an almost HDR look with colors that are really saturated and attractive.
Great improvement.

Great POV Dan,perfect foreground tree for this style of landscape & composition. You certainly did a great job on the sky in comparison to the original good work.Much more vibrant image

Ron

Hello Daniel,

This is an incredible example of an almost 3D effect in an image. I looked at the original and the workshop only to be left amazed at this. I have so much to learn about PP and so little time to dedicate to it. Thanks for this burst of inspiration.

Kind regards,
Jim

Hi Daniel,

Damn that's a beautiful image! Great composition and wonderful post-processing to bring out the colors and contrast. Just wonderful. I think you have Capture NX wired!
