This is actually taken during the day time. I stopped it down to f/14 at 1/200th of a second in order to darken everything up. Then I put an off-camera flash practically right next to his face (to light him up) and had him turn until the flash lit his face the way I wanted it to.

Hello David ,

Fantastic shot. I love it. Expressino is perfect and your patience with the lighting has paid off.

Woah! That's intense. The way you used the flash is just amazing. It really looks like a spot of natural lighting hitting his face, and making those blue eyes glow with...coldness/determination? I don't know, they're just incredibly powerful. Excellent how parts of his blue shirt are partly lit to pick up on the blue in his eyes. All the rest is black shadows and even the trees in the background are silhouetted. Incredible balance, perfect composition. I like how you left just a sliver of negative space at the left side so that he is not too centered and there's a circularity retained. Wonderful effect the combination of some backlighting and the flash lighting created here. Very crisp with lots of detail. Excellent and very unique portrait! TFS!
