Pictured is what I call a hedgerow apple orchard in the Yakima Valley of Eastern Washington (the state). The modern orchard employs the use of the wood and wire fence-like hedging. The trees are of the dwarf variety and the idea behind the modern system is for easier access for the pruners, thinners and pickers with scarcely the need for a ladder. Also, I'm told that the root system will not support the weight of the apples in these varieties so the wires help support the weight once the trees are fruit-laden and without the wires/posts the trees would fall over and be up-rooted. While the typical orchard in the Yakima Valley is still the traditional, evenly spaced tree, tree-row type, this newer type is becoming more and more commonplace. The Yakima Valley is the largest single apple growing region in the United States only marginally larger then the Wenatchee Valley 80 miles to the North. The orchard fan seen in the left background is used for dispersing stagnant cold air when the trees are budding and frost damage poses a threat. The orchard fans raise the temperature slightly by "moving the air" around and thus (hopefully) keeping the buds from damage.
God's best,

Hey Tim :)
Thanks for the interesting info about the local apple orchids in your area...I did not know that apple-growing was so elaborate;) It would be nice to see big red or green apples on the trees, but I can use my imagination just the same :D TFS

Like a factory of apple growing! This is interesting Tim. About 4 kms away we had a beautiful valley of apple and fruit growing orchids. It was so good going there and buying fresh fruit and veges, even picking your own fruit sometimes. Now, there is NO fruit tree in sight. Factories and housing cover the whole land, and all that remains is the names of the orchids on road signs. SO sad. The rates became too high each year and the offer of $$$$$ too much for the owners.
Progress. So I hope these orchids of yours manage to keep in production.

This is very nice! I like several things: how the land slopes downward, the angle at which you shot the rows of trees, the fan, and finally, the focus of the row that you were in as you shot the picture. Great job!
