While photographing bison at Hayden Valley, I saw a large group begin crossing the river. This was taken at long range with 200 mm. zoom x2.
When taking pictures of bison, I try to keep myself within running range of a vehicle I can get behind. Bison may seem as placid as cattle most of the time, but they can be unpredictable. I think they tolerate tourists quite well, as there are always some who think Yellowstone is like a petting zoo. These are the ones who who get too close and invade the bison's personal space.
At one of the visitor centers, they have a video of someone being tossed twelve feet up a tree by an angry bison. |
