This touching altar was created by someone who cared about a lovely young woman named Carolyn who left the earth at a relatively young age (45), which you can see in the years posted on both sides of her photo, which is a part of the altar.
Day of the Dead or Dia' de los Muertos is an ancient Hispanic celebration to remember those who have passed from this life. Carolyn must have enjoyed red shoes, which you can see on the left side. People grieving for their friends and relatives place object, including food and things that were meaningful to that person on their altars.
The festivities is gaining in popularity in San Francisco and was too dense with people, in my opinion to honor these touching memorials, so next year I will go later when the crowds have decreased and proper awareness can be given to the passing peoples' memorials.
Of course, another aspect of the occurrence are the elaborate and often some eerie costumes which are in proliferation. The costumes usually include a skeleton which adds to the reality of Day of the Dead.
I cropped this photo. Hope you find it interesting, if not moving. |
