[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The 44th Annual Scottish Games at Fair Hill, Maryland have a strong component of athleticism. From 9:00 to 16:00, except for an hour break for the massed bands at 12:30, someone is throwing something, and none of objects thrown are what you would expect, balls on chains, weights on chains, rocks, telephone poles all have their turn at being thrown for distance, or height and accuracy. The officials are very careful to make the photographers in the audience stay in or under the stands, away from danger as these missiles can go astray. Here's Harrison Bailey winding up to throw the 29-lb weight for distance. He'll revolve twice before throwing in the opposite direction than the one he is facing in this photo. Harrison is the record holder for this feat, with 87'1" in 2001.

Why am I interested in all this? Well, my grandmother was a McCaslin (sept of clan Buchanan) and I grew up with Scottish stories and bagpipe music.

Exposure Mode Auto; Exposure Program Action; ISO 200; Focal Length 85 mm; Focal Length in 35mm Film 127 mm; RAW-exposure adjusted; cropped, cloned heavily to remove pitchfork leaning against fence, piles of clothing and steeplecase railings, framed.

Hello Lois,

This is not a critique, it has just got far too late in the morning for me to attempt a sensible one, if I was sensible I would be in bed belting out the zeds, so I will just leave a joke for you… I hope you do not mind me being frivolous.

What is worn under the kilt?

Nothing, everything is in perfect working order

Good night Gazza

Aside from the cultural element, and a lovely note, and aside from the backlighting (and you couldn't choose where you stood) the trick element is the moment. The 'pose' expresses visually exactly what this 'event' is all about, generating inertia before the release ... and here it is.
All seriousness aside, this leaves our (my?) imagination to run a little wild.
This is an escaped prisoner, the ball and chain attached to the wrist, and caught in mid-attempt to scale the (rather puny) prison outer fence in one mighty leap. Why he is disguised as a girl, no-one is sure.
Please note that, these days, I am never 'out of points' to donate but you don't get any anyway.

Hi Lois- some perfect timing on this shot and excellent sharpness and detail. I really am amazed at the timing of this shot, as he is almost ready to release the old ball and chain- picture perfect! Well done and a fascinating note as well!

Best wishes,
Steve

Hi Lois ! Nice one ! The compo is great. I have to say this though, the impact of the image would probably be different if the guy had hair. tee-hee :) (what do you think?)

I tought I've commented on this one...
It is such a deep and humorous photo!
Black Scottish warrior in action!

Not usual at all! I like the original!
He wear a Kilt! It change frim the classic athletic shirts! And that hammer, the way he is at the top of the swing give me the impression it is the moment before he throw it away!

highland games in maryland?!
thatīs like an octoberfest in california. *g*
he donīt quite look like a typical scotsman to me,
no red hair, but heīs wearing a kilt,
something i did not yet manage to do,
but always wanted.
wonderful action shot, lois,
hope the telephone pole missed you.
take care, thor.
