Great Sand Dunes
 |
|
| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
While in Colorado, I took a detour to see the Great Sand Dunes. Seeing them in photographs, and seeing them in person, are two very different things. It's like shooting canyons, or anything which has great mass or depth. Photos just don't capture it fully. All we can do is try to compose the shot in order to make the most of a photograph's limitations. I didn't climb this thing, but I overheard some teenagers describe how far it was between each of the ridges on the side of the dune. I was fortunate enough to capture a single person on top, as well as some people on their way up, and a couple in front of the dune. It made me tired just thinking about climbing it.
Re-posted: Sorry, but I noticed I had a water spot in the sky. It was making me crazy. |

Hi matt
what a great shot!

Excellent image. And the size is well represented, otherwise it would be difficult to know the immensity of it. The tonal range is fantastic. Good work!

Very beautiful & intriguing place, Matt. I saw the picture yesterday but did not have time to leave a comment and saw it again today while browsing the gallery. Your comment about the water spot in the sky made me laugh as I would have been in the exact same position as you...I hate it when I don't see the stuff before I post a picture. Back to the picture, very good composition and the people really give us a sense of the size of this dune and I love that there is one person completely at the top. Great light & colours & texture in the sand. Well done!
