[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The photo is called "Long Story" because it's a long story behind this photo and it'll take a long time to tell you.

First off, let me explain what I did to capture this photo. I broke a photographic rule suggesting that I should capture the subject eye. I found the bumps on the snail's back fascinating. Yes, I could have used a narrow aperture (to get a wider DOF from the eye to the skin on the back) but I am an extreme guy, wanting extreme shallow depth of field. At the time, I felt that it would be interesting to think sideway, breaking rules, hoping to make an intesteing photo. It might not work but here it is for you to critique.

Now the story behind the photo:
The day before I took this photo, my dog, LEO was bitten by a rattle snake on his snout while he was in the backyard minding his own business. He came back inside and crawled under my computer desk. I reached down to pet him but he jolted which caught my attention. I saw two puncture marks on his snout so I rushed him to see his veterinarian. Fortunately, he was given a snake vaccine for K-9 last year when it first came out. It certainly bought him more time. Dr. Beighlie injected him with antivenom, antihistamine and antibiotic. I was sobbing like a girl when I came to pick him up later that evening. At this point, the swollen on his snout moved down to his neck (a size of a grapefruit).

That night, I slept next to him , making sure he'd be okay through the night. He woke him up at 5 AM in the morning by licking my hand. I felt that his face had swollen up again so rushed him to the emergency hospital. Since it was a night only hospital, I had to come back to pick him up at 7:30 AM to transfer him back to Dr. Beighlie for observation. When I went home, I couldn't go back to sleep. I was so nervous that I decided to pick up a camera to photograph garden snails in the front yard. Taking photos is a form of meditation to me. I am NOT a morning person so I always miss out beautiful photographic opportunities. I later picked up Leo and transferred him to his vet for a day observation. Thanksfully, Leo has made a full recovery and is a happy healthy dog again.

That's why it's a long story!

Oof ! Glad all's well that ends well.
Photography s a therapy can count. It will distract you from worries while you concentrate on shallowness, compo etc.
To me, the picture is a succes. Intersting and colourful.

A great shot. the colours are fantastic. On one hand i would have liked to see a little more depth - not a lot, just marginally, maybe to make the flower a little easier to view. but on the other hand i love the narrow depth. it is really nice to see something a little unusual as most macros are so set on being sharp - the short depth keeps it interesting. well done!

Hi Nap,
Good to read that eventually Leo recovered from the nasty bite.
I like the shallow DOF in this photo. It focuses on the most beautiful part of the snail and gave the rest of the photo this pleasant soft glow. Sharpness and colors are outstanding.
TFS,
Niek

HI Nap,
that's cute, so lovely eyes ;-)

Hi Nap,
Like you, I am not morning person. And like you, I miss surely beautiful occasions to make beautiful photos. Here, I particularly like the clearness of textures on the back of snail. The blur which surrounds it makes an effective contrast. I like also the history of your dog and I am glad of its happy end. Bravo! Annie

Hi Nap

Hi Nap,
This is a very beautiful macro. I like the DOF and the way you have capture this snail with these superb colors. Very well done.
Luc

But we having all our time! That snail definitively look at you it's clear! And if it's clear it's cause your resolution is excellent! I enjoy the good colors and the very low deep level of clarity...

Great close up Nap, very low dof seems to work in your favour :)

I thank you for your nice comments to my imagers

I see a lot of rules in your photo
There is more or less the 1/3 rule
Snail eyes on strong point
Good use of color contrast yellow green
The DOF make it a bit dynamic for me and don’t fit to a snail (kidding)
Like it very much
RuudBlok

I find this beautiful! How did I miss a photographer like you? can't imagine:)

thye DOF is outstanding and shows what a determined person you are:)

Sabina

Hi Nap - I have not seen many photos of snails, maybe because they are so 'normal'. I like your shot because of you just focus on the snail's back and bumbs with everything else around it left blurry. The yellow makes the image more lively. I also like the overall diagonal from lower left to upper right, indicated by the bent of the flower's stem and the snail's movement. A pretty good outcome for a late-morning bird whose dog has just been bitten by a snake. I am glad your dog is fine again! - Take care, Cordelia :)
PS: Thank you again for your feedback on my lotus flower.
