Repost Note:
Canon just came out with a better RAW procecssing utility called Digital Photo Professional so I decided to use use it to proess my old photo. Personally, I think it did a good job with the contrast. I also decide to crop the photo a little and frame it. I hope this is a big improvement.

Original Note:

The Bird of Paradise is a beautiful flower, native to South Africa. It is a large tropical herb, a member of the banana family. The scientific name is Strelitzia Reginae.

The colors of my neighbor's flowers are so vibrant that I decided to experiment with this abstract shot.

To achieve this, I use a 100mm macro lens on a Canon EOS 10D. In reality, a 100mm macro lens has a 1.6x factor FOV on a 10D (because its sensor is not full frame-sized (35 mm equivalent). Therefore, my 100mm macro lens becomes 160mm on a 10D.

I chose to take the picture on a late cloudy afternoon, using a wide-open aparture (f/2.8) and a low shutter speed (1/45) to get shallow depth of field with the help of a tripod for steadiness. Then I used a build-in TTL flash (with lower intensity setting) so that the blackground is dark and the subject's colors are preserved.

Hi Nap,
This is a very artistic composition with great soft colors and good POV. Lightning is great. This looks a bit like a painting. Well done and well seen, TFS,
Claudine

Very artistic & creative way to present a simple bird of the paradise, Nap. I really like you very shallow DOF creating an almost abstract picture of this flower. Well done!

Hi Nap,
