The end of a grueling 10.5 miles, with horrible boots and loaded packs. Most of that distance was an NPS wilderness trail, the rest was bushwhacking.
Standing in between Canada and the United States, on the edge of a huge waterfall, in a river whose historical importance to the region is nearly unmatched, my friend took this picture of me with my camera.
The voyageurs carried 90-pound sacks up this trail; and during each rendesvouz, each was expected to move eight of them to the Northwest Company's trading headquarters near this river's mouth, on the shores of Lake Superior.
I wonder how many men have stood over these falls and felt such release, or how many have camped next to it and listened to its music. Before the voyageurs and north men, this was all Ojiibwe country.
This river is the beginning of the ancient water route used by traders and explorers to reach the Red River and Lake of the Woods, and beyond into the great Canadian wilderness. |

This is a cool photo, not only do you look like king of the land, haha, but the scenery in the image is really nice, i know Minnesota woods well. Looks like you had a hard/fun time. ~Sam
this photo reminds me of those characters in movies who go off into the wilderness to find themselves...this seems to be a familiar scene once they have finished their vision quest...good to see there is still some untamed world out there...peace***
