Just toying around with my new Digital ELPH, and walking around a certain abandoned flour mill complex, somewhere in Minneapolis' mill district.
This weekend was an impromptu, last-minute attempt to salvage some sanity and remind myself that I am free.
Most of the places we visited will be gone soon; this unique architechture which gives the Twin Cities their character are falling through the cracks of progress, and becoming just a few more bland, retro-modern eyesore condominiums that only a few can afford to inhabit.
I spent a good deal of time wandering the hallways of these relics, quiet and alone, with just my camera to help me record my thoughts. An empty hospital, a brewery, and a flour mill; at different hours of the day, in different neighborhoods of different cities.
Exploring a city from this angle gives a person a new understanding of how it all fits, of where and how the pieces join together. When you look up at a city from beneath, down on it from above, and out of it from within, you start to see that city a little bit differently.
I used to see the city as a dark place, a twisted mass of concrete and culture too complex for anyone to understand. But this weekend, maybe for the first time in my life, when I saw the skyline in the distance as I approached from the interstate, it seemed to spell out, "welcome home."
I've spent too much time in the empty Dakotas. It's time to figure out a New Plan. |

Wow, I hear ya on that, everywhere in the U.S. from Houston, TX to Washington D.C. is going through the same thing, older buildings that were the trademark of certain cities are being torn down and replaced with these horrid, oversized, generic edifices of corporate hegemony. All U.S. cities will look exactly the same soon :(
But on slightly brighter note, excellent shot! I just love the point of view chosen with that light bulb close-up and off-center, only to see the old abandoned hallway of the mill fading away into the background. Excellent natural lighting used for those softened patches of light repeating all the way to the background for added perspective. Nice subdued colors and great tones to express the somewhat somber or melancholy message of the shot. Only things I might pick on: the light hitting the left side of the bulb, at the top, is getting slightly too bright, and I am not sure I like the slight tilt in the shot, it's a little distracting. Wonderful use of a shallower DOF to let the background blurry for the bulb to pop out. Excellent framing and strong composition with the focal point just below-center. You write excellent notes for your photos, btw :) TFS!
