| In Schwab's, T tries on a Confederate army cap near some souvenir shotglasses. While southern whites are often referred to as rednecks in fun, the term is taken by many to be offensively derrogatory. At the same time, the flag featured on the shot glass is one of the most controversial symbols in modern America. The Navy Jack, also known as The Southern Cross, continues to be a source of pride for many in the south who saw the Civil War as an aggression and domination by the North. It is also viewed by many as a symbol of slavery and segregation, and numerous racist extremist groups use it to promote their hateful causes. Battles have flared in a number of southern states, where the flag was flown over government buildings or, in other cases, where the Southern Cross was incorporated into the design of the state flag. |
