Yes, it's the city that never sleeps, but it's also often the city that doesn't move. Standstills like this occur all the time as New York's aging subway system deteriorates into ruins. Sometimes, I stand there and think, I'm in one of the biggest, richest cities in the world, and I might as well be standing on a dirt track in Nepal for all the good this so-called rapid transit is doing me. Sometimes I start up discussion with people about how ridiculous this is. But what surprises me is how many people just accept it, silently resigned to the dysfunction. Probably because I generally ride my bike to work all year long, and don't take the subway very often during rush hour, I seem to have much less than normal tolerance for it. I get upset and agitated. Yesterday, I told all these people that I was going to send this photo to the governor to show him what we deal with every morning. (Now, if only I could trust the Post Office to deliver it to him.)

hi Hugh,

I think this image could be in every big city in the world, they all deal with the same problems. If i would be there every day, i would become crazy !!! I also like to go by bike to work, mp3 with hot music ;) and there we go ! I like the colour and the mood.
best regards, inn

This is fine moody shot. My experience of the New York subway system was better though. I suppose it has deteriorated in the last 19 years.

A tougher shot to capture; your lighting levels are (obviously) low, and I'm guessing the camera needed a high ISO, hence the graininess; but a good shot, and as I have mentioned before, I applaud you for taking photos in public places!

I tend to take a more philosophical view of public transport ... it's a cost of choosing to live in the "stimulating" environment of the city. We get the higher pay, the shows, concerts, exhibitions, the cosmopolitan mix of cultures and the day-in day-out excitement of metropolitan life ... expect the trains to always be late and you won't be disappointed.

Maybe NZ is different, though our metro rail system frequently has long delays or broken-down trains ... to the angry guy next to me, who tuts and talks about writing letters to the Council, I simply say, "at least people don't blow themselves up on our trains, eh." He looks at me as if I'm mad.

Great shot! And even better comment. Agreed 100%.

You really don't seem happy about the subway there...
But look at the bright side - it gives you photo opportunities!
And if you don't trust the post office there, try DHL or something.
Good shot. The boredom and even misery is visible on the people's faces, especially the ones leaning on the wall.
