1951 Studebaker Champion Bullet Nose
The Thrifty One for 51’

Often described by people as the car which didn't know which way it was going -due to the wraparound rear screen which could have been the windshield - the Studebaker Champion was designed by famed stylist Raymond Loewy. He took a lot of his influence from the aircraft industry, and nowhere was this more evident than with the bullet nose which even carried a small spinning propeller early in production. This car has been substantially modified since those days, with a revised and strengthened chassis, Mustang II independent front suspension and a Chrysler rear axle on lowered leaf springs. A tuned Mopar 360 sits under the hood and is mated to a Chrysler Torqueflite gearbox with shift-improvement kit. The body has been treated to shaving off any superfluous trim, and the door handles now open on electric solenoid locks operated by remote control.

In terms of interesting, early fifties styling, two cars come to mind because of their unique, “bullet nose” front end designs– the 1949-50 Ford and the 1950-1951 Studebaker. In an eleventh hour management call for a new front end styling treatment for the ‘49 Ford, moonlighting stylists from Studebaker “borrowed” the “spinner” grill treatment from the Studebaker drawing board and turned it over to Ford, though in much tamer fashion. (The term “spinner” came about when after market accessories, the likes of Warshawsky (better known as J.C. Whitney to the consumer market) offered tiny, airplane-like propellers which mounted in the center of the chrome bullet.)

Though many automobiles began to take on a new look in the early fifties, the new front end treatments of Ford and Studebaker were a bit more radical if not somewhat controversial, particularly in the case of the 1950-51 Studebakers with its pontoon-like front fenders.

Studebakers of 1950 vintage, were divided into two basic series. The Champion (model 9G), smaller of the two, rode a 113 inch wheelbase and was available in three, sub series trim lines, Custom, Deluxe and Regal Deluxe, in body styles of 6 passenger two and four door sedans, a three passenger “business coupe,” and a five passenger “Starlight Coupe” which had a large, partitioned rear window which wrapped around the sides, almost to the rear edge of the front doors.

The top-of-the-line Regal Deluxe line also offered the 5 passenger convertible. Champions were powered by a cast iron, six cylinder “L-head” engine of 169.6 cubic inch displacement (that’s 2.8 liters for all you “generation X’ers” and later). With a low, 7.0:1 compression ratio and Carter, single barrel carburetor, the in-line six provided thrifty operation, but less than exciting performance.

Have a good one!
Linder

Great shot! Neat color!

Hi Linda ,
This is a nice and rare old car . It looks in mint condition but I am not sure of the color for a car . I like the angle you took this photo and the PP work on the grass. I can see it clearly and the most important is to see the bullet nose . You have been lucky to find it . Did you by it ?
Daniel

Wonderful car! Definetly!!!! Bloody hell to compare with this one modern car design sucks!:)

Nice details and colours! well captured!

Hello Linda,
beautiful a car, for the girls since pink ;ODD but a pink beaded. It has very interesting and original forms when one compares our modern cars. Cheer ! to have been likely to be able to cross its road which I hope will be still long, I think it considering the care who carry his owner, a wonder like that, owes it.
TFS, Corinne

Hi Linda, I do enjoy looking at olders cars very much. Now this was a little bit before my time however it certainly has a unique profile and quite the color. Quite fitting setting against the old house in the background. Well caught and captured image. Good focus. Nice job, thanks.

I had long forgotten about this model. I could see Minnie Mouse behind the wheel! This, seen with todays eyes, is sooo Disney!!!! What a find, and pink to boot!

Perfect timing as I shop for cars this weekend. Very cool, very pink - but maybe the gas milage wouldn't be conducive. Well spotted, love the PP works !! TFS Julie

Hi Calamity,
Where do you have to put the batteries? Or is it a spring driven vehicle? Modern horses hû! Fine shot Mâm. Great soft tone lilac colours even the underground is perfect (and that's not always the case in Texas ;)
Hans

Funny car! At that time it was a serious design; now it looks like designed by a child…

Hi Linda
Went back a bit in your gallery. This car is like a bulldog, ugly but beautiful all the same time. The pink well... Nice to see a old split windshield had not seen one in a while. I just love the name "Studebaker" and "champion" reminds me that I'm getting old. Great pic Linda and I just love the grass. Nice job and well presented. Made me smile! Referring to the above comment I did not ear a sound LOL.

Paul
