MARDI GRAS! is french for "Fat Tuesday" and hearty party goers usually drink themselves into a stupor beginning officially 45 days before Easter. Partying and drinking and fighting each other to catch these colorful beads thrown from the floats (and you don't want to know what else!)are top traditions. Purple beads for Justice, Green for Faith and Gold for Power.

Many are shocked to learn that Mobile, AL stakes claim as "Mother of the Mystics". It all began in the year 1711 but Mobiles most significant contribution was New Year's Eve 1830. A group called The Cowbellian deRakin Society - named for the cowbells and rakes used for noise makers - made a spontaneous walk of celebration in the streets. In 1840 floats were added. Marches did not begin in New Orleans until 1852! Mardi Gras has grown and thrived for over 300 years.

If you have ever had the courage to attend Mardi Gras then it comes as no surprise to you that the Carnival has it's roots from Pagan rituals.
Mardi Gras has just ended here and the streets are quiet again. This was our first big party celebration since Ivan's visit, so the Revelers were especially "thirsty" and in the mood to forget their troubles.

I have hung my beads, caught from floats in parades, on Jonathan Livingston SeaGull for memories. This is my tribute to the World's Biggest Party!

Hi Kathleen, I am so happy you did this ! I remember trying to catch not only the beads but also the coins and the moon pies. I moved from one Mardi Gras town to another, equally crazy. Thanks for your tribute to the Mobile carnival, as it's a shame almost nobody outside Mobile seem to know about it.

Thanks !!

Marleen

PS added to Carnival 2005 theme

Excellent composition.
A beautiful layer for magazine! without comments... very very good!
David

I really learned an awful lot reading your note. Thanks for it. And the photo is incredibly sharp and really has all the qualities of a real poster. The beads shine so well, with just a bit of reflection from the light, and you went to town on the colors. But that suits the subject. Well conceived and composed. Where's your signature heart?

It's good to know people are out and about celebrating now. This is a great poster style photo Kat. Would be a good advert for next years Mardi Gras. I like the colourful text. I couldn't find the heart on this one.

Funny picutre, I liked it very much! That parrot is wearing a nice costume for the mardi grass! Great composition and PP work.

PS: You should come to Brazil someday for seeing our carnival, it´s a nice party.

Très belle page couverture pour un magazine! Présentation créative du sujet avec un traitement très soigné de l'image. Bravo Kathleen!
Bye, Jacques

I've heard about Mardi Gras with beads and things. Never understand this, but you gave me (us...) a good note. I'm not really a party-animal (okay, only when I visit a heavy-metal-concert...), so.. I still don't understand the people who like Mardi Gras.
Just as the crazy Carnival here in Holland these days, not my party as well.
The picture is a wonderful creation from you.
And that's what I like though !

And thanks for the history lesson. All along I have thought of Mardi Gras as a New Orleans exclusive. You are more than an entertainer; you are an entertainer as well! Thanks for the illustrated lesson and the beautifully documentary. I lears something daily and usually it is from TL!

ARRRGHHHH!!! I was about to search on you around the image when i saw Diana and Per discussions ;))) So, you are about to make a career on posters?? This is truly great Kat, very showy and colorful. Thanks for the note, never eard anything like this before :) kisses

This looks great!! almost like a real advertising poster!! The whole composition is very original and creative, besides all that, the photo is extremely sharp and with beautiful colours! Very well done Kathleen!

I wonder what Jonathan LS has to say now you forced him to weat all these beads, Kat ;o). I think your logo is a bit heavy, but the compo and colours are ok. On my laptop screen it looks a bit oversharpened, but I should check that later on my normal screen. TFS and for the note.

Merhaba Kathleen,

Excellent idea and its expression...I like the colorful composition you have chosen...

Can

great work there, kathleen... everything is well captured..and nice idea too..and as usual, very intersting notes.... tfs
