I haven't posted here for awhile. I really miss TrekEarth and TrekLens. I have been so busy.

Recently, I did manage to spend two nights taking "Painting with Light" class with Dean Chamberlain. It was so inspiring.

This is my first light painting on flowers. The only post-processings are cropping, unsharp mask and framing. NO photoshop tricks here.

The idea is to set your camera on a tripod with a cable release in a complete darkness. Pick any aperture you like. I would start with f/8. Set the shutter to bulb. Lock your cabel release and let your camera run as long as you need, starting from 30 secs on a small object to 3 hours if you want to paint the entire wide-angle scene (like a forest.) Use a flashlight that uses 2 D-cell batteries and start shining on your subject in all directions using smooth movements. If you want more time, close down your aperture. Make sure you work in 3 dimensional space. No magic numbers here. Just trial and error.

I used a yellow gel on my flashlight for flowers and red gel on my flishlight for the vase The exposure time is about 38 secs. The actual color of the flowers is white.

For digital, set your white balance to tungsten. For film, I recommend using a Tungsten color slide film (either Kodak Ektachrome or Fuji Fijichrome) for best color result.

Fantasic I love the effect and the colours, many thanks for the notes I am dying to have a try at this now.. just a case of finding the time as ever. I checked out the link too, some wonderful shots posted there.

TFS and welcome back after your break

Best regards Helen

Very dramatic lighting here, Nap! This is soo good! I like it a lot! Thanxxx for the note. Super great experiment!
TFS,Freddie :)

I like a lot your experiment. It's intersting and very well realised.
The colors are beautiful,warm.
Your comp is also very nice but I would had gone for a tighter frame, because, IMHO the elements in the back of the vase distratc a bit from the flowers.
Your lightning tech here is indeed very neat. Thx for describing so detailed.

Very beautiful image! TFS!

Have a great weekend, Stef :))
