Cherokee Rose (Rosa laevigata)
Legend of the Cherokee Rose(nu na hi du na tlo hi lu i)
When gold was discovered in the state of Georgia the Federal Government, ignoring it's treaty with the Cherokee People, relocated them into Oklahoma. A quarter of them died during the journey West. In 1838 the route taken was named "The Trail of Tears" because the mothers, unable to save their children, shed many tears of unthinkable sorrow. The elders prayed for a sign from above to help the mothers in their time of grief. GOD, looking down on the plight of the Cherokee People, caused a stone in the shape of a flower to form where evey tear had fallen. The next day a beautiful white rose sprang forth from each flower. The white represents the tears that were shed, the gold center represents the gold stolen from the Cherokee lands and the seven leaves on each stem represents the seven clans of the Cherokee Nation.
