[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Where to start with explaining this picture. Okay, it's a scan and I had to use PhotoShop to lower the quality, because of all those people there were too many kB's (?) Yesterday evening I met Darren in the Gallery with his picture Blue Bayoo - a well chosen title for a wonderful picture in which you could almost hear the silence and totally enjoy the atmosphere. Since I don't know how to make a link - his name is "punwit".
Why do I love such pictures, you might also ask yourself. Well -how to describe it in one word- our life has been pretty eventful. Then you really know how to appreciate the quieter moments I can assure you.
.
Back to the picture. What's this. Why you went there?
In April 1998 we got a phone call that our fosterson graduated - got his Master of Science Electrical - in May in Lawrence Kansas. He told us that he was not going to participate with the celebrations (called Engineering Recognition Ceremony and in the afternoon Walking Down The Hill. Why? because he would be the only one with no family present.
Well that could be fixed - with his mother we searched for the cheapest tickets and Delta Airlines could offer us a great deal.
How were the Airports in America, how were the shops in America, how was the campus in Lawrence, how was his car, how were the people---Impressive---
Sunday morning May 17 at half past 5 the alarmclock woke us. First order of things was to congratulate my husband Ad with his 49th birthday, then grab a cup of coffee and a donut (nothing else available) and fetch our fostersons mother. At half past 6 we were present in front of a huge hall, the Oliver Residence Hall and temperatures that day would be 35 C or more. Inside we thought we were entering a fridge - totally not used to Airconditioning, we forget to bring warmer clothing.
Well all went well and in the afternoon we set out on a short walk to the stadion. It was short in our fostersons mind and he was wearing Teva's, however I was wearing high heels and boy, was that a mistake!
.
This whole Stadion filled up with students who graduated, Philosophy, All kinds of Engineering, Aerospace, Architectural, Chemical, Environmental Health Science and so on.
We did not enter the stadion, but were sitting on the grassy slopes and most of the ceromony I watched through my zoom lens. Lots and lots of people collapsed because of the heat and ambulances had a busy afternoon.
I got all kinds of present when we went back, and one of them was that I was pronounced an official KU Mum.
.
Darren -punwit- from the Blue Bayou, wrote I quote: it is with the proliferation of computers and the internet. The likelihood of us ever conversing would have been next to nil prior to the internet.
.
.
Well if you got this far, I wish you a very nice day.
Prettige dag
en bedankt voor het lezen,
Els

Hendrika, thanks for posting this as it is a fine shot of Memorial Stadium and brings back memories for me. Both my sister and I attended KU although she was the only one to graduate from that fine institution.

Also thanks for the kind words regarding Blue Bayou. I had that framed and presented it to my sister last Christmas. I'm glad that the image gave you pause from your hectic schedule and I hope that you find many other ways to rest and reflect.

Wishing you the best,
Darren

Hello Els,

Els,

What a nice photo and a lovely story. It made me want to cry!!I know how proud you must have been for your foster son!! Congrats on being a KU Mom too! You saw the "heart" of America in the Midwest.

I was so taken by the note you wrote and the story, that I almost forgot the photo "critique"!LOL. Great shot of an exciting day. You have good perspective and the excitement of the moment is evident with all of the people.

Well done frame too. Lisa
