a little photographic tribute to one of my favorite artists.. Georgia O'Keeffe :)

i was playing around last night with some macro shots i took of a pot of tulips and not finding much i wanted to work with.. then after some fiddling and cropping this image popped out that i liked a lot and reminded me a bit of Georgia's wonderful flower paintings.. (not the very suggestive ones.. might experiment with trying a homage to those another time! ihih)

for anyone not familiar with the great Georgia, here's a wee bio! she was born in 1887 in Wisconsin and studied art in the then dominant style of 'imitative realism' at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Art Students League in New York, there in 1908 she won the League's William Merritt Chase still-life prize for her oil painting 'Untitled' (Dead Rabbit with Copper Pot) but shortly after she abbandoned the art world.. later saying that she had known then she could never achieve distinction working within this tradition.. 4 years later her introduction to a forward thinking artist and art educator, Arthur Wesley Dow, reaquainted her with her art.. his 'revolutionary' ideals believed the goal of art was the expression of the artist's personal ideas and feelings and that this was best realized through harmonious arrangements of line, colour, and 'Notan' the Japanese system of lights and darks.. Dow's ideas offered Georgia an alternative to imitative realism and re lit her passion as an artist for which all us art lovers are very grateful! she went on to become one of the most celebrated and loved of American Artists with her beautifully rich, colourful, graceful and subtly abstract paintings, largely inspired by nature and including her often very sensual & suggestive flowers..

if you're interested in seeing some of her work there is a great online collection you can find by clicking here that has large number of her various themed paintings on display

***

the tulips had opened a lot and become very tall in their pot so i tied a piece of ribbon around the stems to pull them together into a bunch, then shot them in macro mode from various angles about 10-15 inches away with the camera set to high exposure, without flash and with a lamp behind the camera and some natural light coming from the window to the left

minimal post processing:
cropped, resized, sharpened
cloned out a few dark pollen spots that had fallen on the inner petals
increased saturation & contrast as the colours were a bit faded
framed & signed

thanks for looking & hope you enjoy it :)

This really looks like one of her paintings ;-) Those reds were definitely on her pallete, I am certain that I've seen it in some of her paintings. I like your idea for this macro, even the big frame (and I am not usually a great fan of those...) that I think works really well here.
A great tribute!!
Ana

Ayda, you captured an artistic view point of the tulip. It's not your typical macro, this was well thought out and done. Your exposure is spot on and the DOF is good.
Excelent work and composition.

Mike

Ayda, it seems that today is the flowers day!!!
;-)))
I don't know Georgia O'Keeffe but you have done a great image.....

Ayda it is this kind of shots we are all longing for after a cold and long winter. Colours warmth, and happiness. Love the way you crop the photo, and for a minute I thought it was another type of a flower until you described it in your comment.

I always like to read the comment written by the author, and find yours very well done and a enjoyable. Thanks

Ayda, you made a very beautiful tribute to this painter!
The macro is superb with that intense red color of the tulip and the big black frame :)
Congrats!
Marisa

Great macro. The colors are so vibrant and the details are wonderful. It definitely reminds me of a Georgia O'Keeffe painting. Well done.
