[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I've been trying a long time for a photo of one of our neighborhood hawks. Yesterday, unexpectedly it was sitting on a lower limb and basking in the sun just before sunset. The sun was almost like a spotlight on it.

I hope it does this more often.

I used Gaussian blur on everything except the hawk.

Hope you enjoy!
Reid

Hi Reid

Good use of a shallow dof, to isolate & emphasize the fg detail on the hawk. The colour contrast of amber & green works well here. Tfs!

Dear Reid Stone,
a extremely rare moment of the hawk you took!
this hawk looks so brave in the shining sun ray, and has keen eyes and beautiful wings.
the wild hawk is decreasing on the earth...
thank you,
Akihisa

Good light, the way the sun hits this hawk against the shadowed background is very spectacular.

The metering here is mostly good, although possibly a little slow shutter speed, some of the white and yellow tones are slightly overexposed, which does take away some of the photo's richness.

Composition and PP work are great.

I was cheating and read Rew's critique. One solution to what he is mentioning would be set the camera to automaticly under expose by a half to a third of a f-stop. My Nikon D-70 produces better richer highlights when I do that. You might try it with your Canon if the hawk returns.

We are off on a ten day photographic road trip tomorrow morning through Nevada, Arizona Utah, and Colorado. Should be great fun and many images for posting.

See you in a while

Dan

Yep! Directly on the sun! I like that... The add of blur around suggest dreamy mood. The posture of the bird have interest too! It suggest a predator very well!

uhmm not perfect definition.. but.. it wasnt easy, i suppose..
a good try... however, i like it
ciao Marco

Interesting coincidence: the day before, I spotted two hawks on top of one of a restaurant right in town. Taking pictures, one swooped me within inches of my head....
I think their numbers are increasing in urban areas. We used to have a few in the railyards where I worked, but now we see more and more lately.
Difficult lighting, nice composition.
Cheers
Otto
