Autumn Hug

“We need four hugs a day for survival. We need eight hugs a day for maintenance. We need twelve hugs a day for growth.”
- Virginia Satir

One of the most wonderful developments in Andrew's life over the last few years has been his control of his emotions .. Even on heavy medications he was physically violent towards others close to a hundred times a day .. Finally after a long battle with our school district we got Andrew placed with a private specialist that in a few months managed to reduce his violence towards others to the point where it is a very rare event.

In those days of violence we had to very carefully manage Andrew's relationship with his little sister .. It is so wonderful that we can just let them be with each other now .. Andrew's sisters help him grow in so many ways now that they can be with their big bear of a brother. One of the most wonderful things i my life is to see how much our three kids care for each other ..

Being emotionally flat or unresponsive is often listed as a symptom of autism .. Andrew has always been the opposite .. his heart is always on his sleeve .. and despite how tactile defensive he is about most things .. he is almost always up for a hug.

Hi John,
One of my favorites of yours . . . popping colors, a meaningful moment, and a note to challenge and reflect.
On bad days a colleague of mine and I will console each other, "All we really have to do today is survive!" You've shown us the easy way to always get beyond that.
Thanks again,
Karen

Hello, John!
It's a nice mellow autumn capture. I'm glad that things with Andrew improve. You are an excellent photographer and a magnificent parent.
Best wishes!
Anton

What emotion you capture both in story, seasonal and people human interest. In this way you not only share a picture but a feeling. It is great editorial work. If I were publishing still today this would be one I would make sure was prominent.
Bob

Hi John, I've been reading a few of your notes about your son and it's a very touching story. I really admire your positive attitude and your love for him comes across very well in the notes you write. I hope Andrew continues to progress and finds his place. In the context of your writings your quote(?) on your intro page says much more than at first glance "Once upon a time, There was a little boy, And he went outside".

Great shot the autumn colours are fantastic and the path leading to the "huggers" is nice. Perhaps if you moved you POV a little to make the path a little more diagonal and have the subjects off centre it would give it a little more impact.

Cheers

Paul

Hi John,
What a wonderful day your family shared. I've always been a BIG believer in getting my 12 hugs a day and when I'm with my folks, I try to make sure they get theirs.
HLJ, Pat

Hi John,
I don't think some people realize how important those hugs are, or appreciate them when they can get them, I know myself I'm so looking forward to getting one tomorrow at 4PM EST. As I've been missing that human contact for way too long! A beautiful photo you've posted, not only because of the autumn colors and the mountain path but the two on the path in that big hug and the smile I have on my face looking at it. TFS

Hello John,
This seems like a very pleasant path to enjoy the colours of autumn!
A pretty image, where the human element is well taken care of, great clarity of colours and a well balanced composition with a good lead-in!
