California has been absolutely pummeled by winter storms over the last few days. Last night as the storm raged I still had hope that when I woke up for sunrise, the sun would have a chance to light up the sky. Luckily, it did just that. I headed down to familiar spot at China Camp State Park and worked as fast as I could because this light only lasted but a few minutes. To control the light I stacked a .9 and .6 Lee ND Grad and managed to get this 3 second exposure.

PP: Processed from RAW with no modifications - this is straight out of the camera. The strong saturation can be partially attributed to the the .6 and .9 ND grads. I didn't notice it before, but the resulting transition line is a little more obvious then I would like.

Minor cloning in CS2 to remove a dust spot and pesky water spot. Re-sized for TL and USM.

Great exposure
Marc

Excellent photography here Mike !!
A tripod is a very good friend of both the photographer and the camera !
And in the hands of someone who knows what they are doing (like here).. the results speak for themselves.

Best regards, Daniel

Hi Mike,
Great capture, certainly worth getting up for, I like the effect that the long exposure has had on the water and the colours are certainly those of a fire in the sky.
Well done

Hello Mike,
Amazing sunset, what a great colors and POV, I love how look the water in the long exposure. Excelent done! Thanks!
Mihaela

Hi Mike,
A stunning "fire in the sky" image. The relative long shutter time has a result the water between the rocks on bottom of the picture looks like mist. Perfect my friend, a superb colourful picture with an mystic mood!
Job very well done my friend.
Hans

nice capture
amazing colours and well done vertical framing

Outstanding image Mike. Rule of thirds, a little "s" curve, vibrant color, some nice texture...great job. Straight to my favorites.

Joe

Magnificent exposure work Mike!
You sure picked a beauty of a spot too.
Well worth getting up and the trip over I bet.
Wonderful colors and clarity,
Love it.
Vincent

Wow Mike, what a fantastic image. I have really liked your other images but this one really stands out. Would make a fantastic print. Color is both striking at the horizon and subtlely stunning on the rocks. The long exposure made the water looks like clouds.
I can't image how you could improve it.
Rick

Super impressive Mike. I know this spot. You hit the perfect morning ahd the Tokina strikes again. The three second REALLY did a wonderful job on the water. Absolutly stunning.

Dad

Hi Mike
Good title, the sky is litterally ignited. Very nice warm colors of the upper third of the scene and good movement effect of the running water or iss it only fog.Great composition and nice depth of field.
ND Grad usually gives a kind of demarcation, how did you manage?
Bravo
Serge

Hello Mike.
Really a gorgeous sky.
Always stunning to see and to photograph it.
I do have some like this too. (see a few uploads before)
Your long exposure time gave the water a stunning 'smoke'.
Excellent work, well done.
Best regards from Jan

Hi Mike, very nice shot. Lovely sunrise. There isn't too much wrong here so please excuse me for nit-picking. For me the forground is a little too dark and too blue and the reds too strong. I've done a workshop to show you an alternative. I hope you like it and I hope you don't mind.

This picture doesn't even look real, good job! Great angle and the colors are wonderful.

This is truly outstanding Mike! Love the intense saturation and I really like the bit of orange on the tops of the blue darker rocks! Vertical really works well here!

Wow! Composition-wise this is very good, the rocks on the foreground provide a great anchor. The exposure, the colors are just out of this world. Your "luck" combined with your technical expertise produced an excellent (maybe more) landscape shot. Great work Mike! TFS
