I'm re-posting part of my note for a similar image on TrekEarth. "I had taken pictures of this statue (at Menemsha Beach, on Martha's Vineyard) before, but usually with a blue sky behind it. The sun was setting fast, and I wanted to get to closer to the harbor and the water, but I knew this would make for a dramatic image against the backdrop of sky and clouds. I made my way about 50 yards across the supposedly deer-tick infested sand dunes, until I had the statue between me and the setting sun. A few shots later I was headed toward the marina and about fifteen minutes worth of sunset pictures."
The version I posted on TrekEarth was not the same image as this one, but was taken within seconds of it, from a slightly different angle. This image, has more of the background cropped out, a white frame added, and pieces of the statue extending into the border. I did that by creating a bottom layer filled with white, then selecting a rectangular frame at the point where the current inner edge is. I switched to Quick Mask, and painted in the areas of the fish and harpooner that extend outside the edge (which added them to the mask. I then inverted the selection and deleted everything outside the selection, revealing the white bottom layer. I played with some drop shadow effects, but didn't really care for any of them. Finally, I sharpened the image, resized it, saved and uploaded it. |
