[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is a second picture from the Prologue of the Tour of California. This picture is really about Panning which is the movement of the camera following a subject in order to keep the subject clear but showing the motion blur of the background. Sometimes the effect can be simulated in Photoshop but it will never be as realistic as real panning.

The trick in Panning is to practice keeping the camera straight and smooth during the movement. The next trick is the shutter speed which depends on the speed of the subject, the distance away from the camera and the focal length used.

In this case the subject was traveling at 40km/hour and was about 5 meters from the camera. I tried 1/100 and couldn't get the sharpness of the subject but had good blur in the background...eventually I got the results I was looking for with 1/200 sec. The time trial is a good event to practice since riders come through every two minutes. In the longer stages, the pack comes by together so you only have one chance to get it right.

Even after 1000 practice shots, I was still missing more than half the shots.

Good job panning and the crop you chose makes the photo unique. As on the photos some cycling racing I look forward to seeing more. TFS

Hi Roger,

A Panning Success!! Yipee! I love the effect of panning and have tried several attempts over the years. I won't give up! I am thankful for digital cameras (delete, delete, delete ---in my case).

This is a great shot. I love it! Well done.

Lisa

not easy i know and this is really good. you could do with a shutter speed of 400+ and a little more space at the front of the racer, but hey at least you got a decent shot.

Yes Roger, photoshoped image could never be more inspiring than this. Great panning shot again showing that you are doing a very good positive progress. Nice informative note, too.
Regards,
Ramdan.

Hi Roger,
Great action capture with the speeding cyclist seen in clear focus and sharp details.
The colors are clear and crisp to go along with the wonderful blur in the background.
Regards, Tom
