so sorry i've been unable to critique and such over the weekend.. my chronic fatigue condition is particularly bad right now so my energy levels are non existent.. this happens every now and then but fingers crossed it will improve and i can be more active :-)

i did manage to take a few pics saturday as i really wanted to answer Richards (Shutter2Think) challenge for his 'more than words' theme.. as i was telling him i have virtually no books with me here as i was never meant to be here long so my books went to california with my mum like a lot of my things.. and as i've been too weak to go to the book store or library i had to improvise! so i looked around and found i did have this little world atlas so 'aha!' i thought.. seeing as one of the things that preoccupies me most these days is my desperate desire to escape from here and back to europe where life, though still very hard.. offered me some solace and inspiration and hope for the future that have all painfully diminished since i've been here... in many ways there are few books that symbolically say more about me and my soul at this moment than an atlas..

echoing the sense of a 'great escape' my thought was to try and create a sort of old movie mysterious mood and appear like i was an undercover resistance agent or something (fighting for my own personal liberation), so i put on my cabby hat and wire rimmed glasses for that retro feel and tried to look a bit shifty and cautious as if i was always aware and afraid of those forces that might try to thwart or hinder this desperate escape i was planning.. ihih and i realize that Richard wanted the title of the book to be 'revealing' and not only the content.. but i guess if you add a T to atlas you get 'at last' which is a phrase that will certainly be filling my head and heart if and when my great escape is successful.. ^_^

shot (in b&w) at night in macro mode (camera about 2 1/2 feet away) with quite strong artificial light and using the night mode flash

* cropped, resized, unsharp mask
* adjusted levels to intensify contrasts
* cloned out background using a mixture of normal, darken, dissolve & multiply settings on the clone tool to better maintain grain in an even way
* used magic wand tool (tolerance setting of 22) to select only the background area on the right of me in the photo
* applied a gentle lighting effect in only that selected area so the cloned out background didn't look too uniform in tone and shadow but without the light effect altering the tones of the rest of the image
* did some more fine detail cloning to smooth the edges of were the selected area with the light effect met the rest of the image
* framed, signed & converted to grayscale

hugs to all and sorry once again my participation can't be as full as i would wish right now.. thanks so much for all the wonderful kind comments and feedback you've given for my posts.. it really means the world to me and helps so much :-)

congratulations! so well done. Looks like you executed your goals perfectly. not bad for someone who's feeling poorly. : ) great, great shot and thank you for all the helpful notes. hope you start feeling better today. regards, ck

Hi Ayda!
This is too cute! :]
Well...an atlas can say a lot of a person. For you, the obvious as you are a worldly woman. And, your desire to go home a sense of family and belonging to your being. See? Not a bad pick at all!
Thanks for this!
Take care!
Richard

Ayda...... you are great.... also without fishnets ;-)))
thanks........

It is a little book, but a very impressive one. Lots of information on it... your expression and choice of book I will describe you as a very Cosmopolitan girl. This is complimented by your eclectic background and your languages. Again, a nice beautiful portrait of you. Nice work on the PP I have picked up a couple of tricks. thanks and get better. Life is good... enjoy it as if it was your last day.

HI Ayda, hope you feel better soon. Great b/w, very creative and funny. Great shot and great note !

Marleen

Hello Ayda,
This picture is very artistic.. Composition is nominative.. Good balance between white, grey and black and contrast is good..
Congrats!

A fine contribution for the theme, Ayda, an "office"-look in this way, it's funny and the way you look too !

Great contribution, Ayda! Your look tells everything. Beautiful self-portrait! TFS and take care!

This is just great. Even though you are so tired, you go above and beyond to complete Richard's challenge. Love the pose and the book you chose for your great escape. Nice work.

Funny...you really create a sense of suspence, overall by your look and the pp you made increase the atmosphere of suspect.Sei una grande interprete delle tue foto.
Bravissima.

I love the expression on your face, I want to share the secret. What is over there? The "shiftyness" really works, I hope that you can escape to wherever makes you happy soon.

Ayda, fantastic shot with a very moody atmosphere!!
You really look like a kind of spy!! The intention is perfectly done in your composition ;-)))))
and what better than an atlas to have like a compass to travel back home!!
Congrats.
Marisa

Hope you improve quickly and things get better for you.
Just wondering, maybe you should talk to my wife. She was very tired, pooped out, no energy for years, until one day she decided to do a process of elimination with foods.
She has found that Gluten, wheats, flour and all modified corn starch that is related to wheat makes her tired, bloated, pooped out, sickly feel, achy joints, digestive system off etc. etc. Just a stab in the dark.
Anyway, a big improvement since she has changed her eating habits. :)

Anyway, excelent shot and well done on this composition. The B.& W. is fantastic and very retro like. Excelent work.

Mike

absolutely fantastic shot there, ayda... really interesting.. you looks so cute and nice pose there.. i like the overall contrasts and the composition very very much.. and thanks for sharing the very details notes too... well done!!! thumbs up!

This is a very nice B&W portrait Ayda. Love the pose and especially that hat. The high contrast goes well with the retro look you wanted to achieve. My only nitpick is the book. It looks a bit flat, maybe closing it a bit would have worked better? I really don't know, just something to try out I guess. Other than that, great work! :)

Hi Ayda.
First of all, I hope you'll be able to charge battery as soon as possible and for as long as possible. take care.
Great work here. strong white with deep black and evrey kind of grey that comes between. Brilliant.
Just an idea. IMO the book could be a bit less vertical in order to see borders of pages. It could have given more perspective.
However it is a nice shot. I like.
See you and have great break.
Denis.

I love your modern look here, but it seems that you find something more interesting out of the book haha!
Nice light made by levels, I love that.

What a great composition Ayda you made, you look beautiful ;-) They way how you look, your cabby and the book is one of great artistic values. It’s always a gift to see you compositions Ayda, even in difficult times.
Thank you so much to share this one with us Ayda ;-)))))

Hi, Ayda--
Great photograph. Very telling furtiveness in the eyes. The lighting is extremely good, and helps maintain the focus on your expression. Well done.
As far as the chronic fatigue is concerned, don't give up hope. My wife and I were both diagnosed with it a year or two after we were married (23 years ago). It was brutal for a while, and really hampered our activities, but eventually (years, not months . . . sorry) we learned to adjust to it. I won't bore you with all the details here (e-mail me if you want to talk specifics), but plenty of rest, a good attitude, a good diet, and a "little" bit of exercise will make all the difference over time. Hang in there.
All the best,
Michael

hey ayda!
a great capture there, an interesting facial expression, and a very cool and refreshing mood and tone. good use of black and white to your advantage! the crop is pretty good too!

with pleasure - my two points for this picture

Ayda, (although I prefer chiara-luna) (meaning pure/clear moon, right?) (such a beautiful name).

Your screen name, like your image is very beautiful. And furthermore, I totally understand the concept of the great escape. I have been working internationally for quite some time now and right now I'm stuck in South Korea until at least December :,-(

Your note was very useful. Your explanation of how to achieve the high-key lighting effect is something I will use some time in the future I'm sure. The shifty look is well thought out, as it is often the case that there is always something/one over our shoulder plotting to scupper our escape.

I sincerely hope that you eventually manage your escape without too much trouble.

Take Care,

Lance

What a wonderful b&w poster-look photograph. I love the hat and glasses and the "shifty" look. The composition makes a real statement.
Wishing you a speedy return to a full and active life without the dreadful chronic fatigue problems. Take good care of yourself.

I love your composition, Ayda.
The look to the side and the fingers on the book...
